New Arapahoe & Clarkson Traffic Signal
Overview
The City of Centennial is installing a new traffic signal at Arapahoe Rd. and Clarkson St. This project includes pedestrian facilities, lighting and marked crosswalks. Currently, the nearest signalized crossings of Arapahoe Rd. are located to the west at Broadway and to the east at Franklin St.
This project was selected for funding by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) as part of the Safer Main Streets Initiative. In 2020, the Safer Main Streets Initiative was created to support infrastructure projects that improve safety and accessibility along urban arterials (non-freeway corridors in the Denver Metro area). This initiative focuses on vulnerable users, such as pedestrians, bikers, motorcyclists, transit users, the elderly and those with disabilities.
Project Location
The signal will be installed at the intersection of Clarkson Street and Arapahoe Road, with pavement marking modifications occurring on Clarkson Street from Arapahoe Road to E. Panama Drive.
Project Timeline
Construction will begin in May 2025, with an estimated to completion of Fall 2025.
Project Benefits
Clarkson St. runs the entire length of the City from north to south, with traffic signals at all major arterial roadways except at Arapahoe Rd. and County Line Rd. Once complete, this project will improve safety and convenience for residents traveling along Clarkson St. In addition, Clarkson St. south of Arapahoe Rd. currently has bicycle lane markings. With the new signal, the bicycle infrastructure will connect to the High Line Canal Trail north of Arapahoe Rd. And provide a continuous route to the C-470 trail just south of County Line Rd.
Traffic Impacts
Once construction begins, motorists can anticipate occasional lane closures on Arapahoe Road from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Minor traffic impacts can be expected on Clarkson St. for striping. Brief traffic holds are anticipated during signal pole and arm installation.
